Angry Hacked: Fixes will take several more days

Usually, I keep my posts related to Russia, but I need to post a short administrative note. My PC crashed about three weeks ago so I have not had the chance to post anything lately. I tried a few repairs, but gave up and gutted the PC because symptoms were pointing to serious hardware issues.

On Friday, my components arrived to build a new computer. I built the PC and installed most of the software necessary for the basics in about four hours. I was excited to get back to working on a few of my websites, but as I checked Russophile.com my jaw dropped. There was a large, dangerous looking graphic announcing that Russophile.com had been hacked. The hack also prevented me from accessing my control panel so I had to work most of the weekend to just get the site back to basic working order.

I also had the opportunity to find out the exciting news that my web host's back up procedures are severely lacking which has made this more difficult. I know that the site was working last Thursday, but the host's backups from before that day still all have the hack in it.

What does this mean to any Russophile.com forum members? Not much as far as I can tell. Well, other the inconvenience of the site not being available for a few days. The most that could have happened is that a hacker took your email address. I hope that it did not happen, but it is possible.

Currently WORKING:
  • Forum software basics are working again, so you can read and post again.
  • vBSEO is working to make the static URLS so external links to the site should still work
  • Russian Quotes is working
  • Russian photo album is working except for the preview thumbnails.
  • Pictures in posts are not appearing
  • Cascading Style Sheet is not working on thread pages so the pages are difficult to read.
  • Thumbnails of pictures in the album do not appear
  • The thread tagging system which attaches keywords to posts is not working.
  • The sidebars that improved the navigation must be set up again.
  • Welcome headers need to be updated
STILL NOT WORKING:
  • Need to fix the footer (I bought the right to remove the Ad management system footer)
  • The post and forum statistics are still not working.
There may be a few short site outage as I work through the issues because I have to update about the software and several plugins.

Sorry for the mess!

Re: Hacked: Fixes will take several more days

I was shocked to see Russophile defaced. I've seen hacked blogs before and many of them never came back. So, I'm glad to see you back. Hold on!

Thanks for the encouragement. There were a few times over the weekend that I considered deleting the entire site, but I spent too much time building it to give up. Plus, I think that it provides some interesting information about Russia. Just two weeks ago, I spent an hour on the phone with someone considering taking an expat position in Siberia -- he found me through this website.

Once I get the site looking OK again could some other bloggers make a new link to one or more of my articles? Google has stopped sending me any traffic due to the hacking. Fresh links to my site would help tell google that I am "OK" again based upon other website owners' opinions.

Fixed Since Initial Notice:
  • Cascading Style Sheets (formatting) is working on thread pages so they are readable again.
  • The thread topic tagging system which attaches keywords to posts is working again.
  • The sidebars that improved the navigation are set up, but I need to turn it on the home page.
STILL NOT WORKING:
  • Pictures in posts are not appearing
  • Welcome headers need to be updated
  • Thumbnails of pictures are not working either in the photo album.
I think that I spent 7 hours on this just this weekend. What a frustrating experience!
