Russia recently banned Polish meat calling it a health risk. Many people, including European Union officials, speculated it was due to political retaliation for reasons such as
Poland removing Soviet monuments as
Estonia did with the Bronze Soldier. Now, it seems that Polish meat may actually be bad.
Terraslon blogged an article (and commented on EU hypocrisy) showing that
Germany stopped a truck of spoiled Polish meat (
English Translation). This was the exact same day that the EU Commission head
Jose Manuel Barosso said of the Russian ban on Polish meat:
Quote:

We believe there are no reasons for the ban. It's a discrimination. We don't feel it's fair," he added. "We in Europe have the highest consumer protection standards in the world. We would not allow Polish meat to be circulated in Europe if we thought it didn't respect those standards.

From the articles I found
about spoiled meat in Germany and
meat smuggling in Germany, it seems the EU might better mind its own meat. There were literally hundreds of web pages citing spoiled meat in Germany in a Google search, so Jose Manuel Barosso might want have his people do a little more research. And their problems may be even greater now that Russia is not taking Poland's rancid trash.
Today,
Martin Schulz said during talks with
Sergei Mironov that the
Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) must not be allowed to fail because of a little "Polish sausage." So mabe the EU is going to come to its senses on Russia's ban on Polish meat.
When I lived in Russia, I noticed that it seemed every country in the world imported its worst products and quality rejects to Russia. I am not sure if that is what the importers asked for to improve margins or if that is what the exporters gave them to increase their margins. However, it is rather obvious when you buy a pair of Turkish socks that last two runs through the washing machine before disintegration. If the Turks can make rugs that last for years, I am quite certain that they can make decent socks, but they never arrived in Russia. This has improved over the years, but it is still easy to find poor quality, if not dangerous goods, in the market.
Although, America has the same problem with "Dollar stores" that tend to sell cheap Chinese junk. Hardly a week goes by that there is not some recall of a kid's toy that was distributed through one of those junk shops because it has lead in it or causes a swallowing hazard. Never buy your kids a toy from one of those so-called dollar stores -- it is not worth the risk.
