Sean recently posted about the number of
military recruits that may be faking illness to avoid obligatory military service. The Russian military knows that it has an image problem internally, so they are trying to improve the image in various ways. Terraslon recently reported one method --
Russian Army dance parties.
Another obvious method is television. Today, I noticed that Russian military recruiting videos are posted on YouTube. Many of these seem rather like the ones used in the United States -- they focus on the adventure (jumping out of planes) and the team work. (Although, with the Iraq war dragging on, many of the commercials in the United States are now targeted at encouraging parents to allow their children sign up for the military.)
Here is one of the Russian military recruiting videos posted on YouTube that is similar to most in the United States:
One video uses a different method than the military commercials that I have seen in the United States. In this one, the soldier returns home to his loving girlfriend and has enough money to buy drinks for all his friends:
I noticed that someone mashed up various clips from these videos and put them to Nickelback's "Someday" which I think is great song.
The video of the soldier with girl above reminded me of the music video "Kroshka Moia" by Ruki Verh from about eight years ago because this video shows the opposite -- The military recruit is scrubbing the floor while his girlfriend is out with other guys at the club:
